How to Donate to an Education NGO in India (80G Guide)

How to Donate to an Education NGO in India (With 80G Tax Benefits)

Most of us want to help a child get an education. The hard part is knowing where to send the money and whether it will reach the right place.

This guide covers how to pick a trustworthy education NGO, what 80G and 12A actually mean, and what a donation can do.

Step 1: Choose the kind of education work you want to support

"Education" is a broad cause. Narrowing it down will help you find the right NGO.

  • Direct learning support. Tuition, remedial classes, books and stationery.

  • Access. School fees, uniforms, transport, scholarships.

  • Girls' education. Programs that reduce dropouts among girls.

  • Skills and careers. Computer training, vocational courses, English speaking.

  • Wellbeing. Mental health awareness and life skills, which help children stay in school.

Step 2: Check that the NGO is genuine

This is the step many donors skip. It takes ten minutes.

  • Legal registration. A trust, society or Section 8 company.

  • 12A registration. Shows the NGO's income is eligible for tax exemption.

  • 80G registration. Allows donors to claim a tax deduction, if eligible.

  • NGO Darpan listing. The government portal where NGOs register.

  • Annual reports and audited accounts. A transparent NGO will share these.

  • Contact details. A real address, phone number and email.

The Phoenix Foundation is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, and holds 80G, 12A and CSR-1 certification. Our registration details are on our about page.

What is 80G, and how does the tax benefit work?

Section 80G of the Income Tax Act allows deductions for donations to certain approved funds and charitable organizations. Depending on the NGO's approval, the deductible portion may be 50% or 100% of the donation, sometimes subject to a limit based on your income.

Three things to remember:

  1. The NGO must hold a valid 80G certificate.

  2. You need a donation receipt with the NGO's PAN and 80G details.

  3. 80G deductions are generally available under the old tax regime and not under the new regime. Tax rules change often, so check with a chartered accountant.

Cash donations above a certain limit may not qualify, so use bank transfer, UPI, card or cheque.

Step 3: Understand what your money does

Ask the NGO what a specific amount covers. For example, many programs can break down costs such as:

  • Books and stationery for a child for a year

  • A month of tuition or a learning session

  • Study materials for a classroom

  • A school kit

At The Phoenix Foundation, donations to our Education for All project go toward learning centers, school supplies, books, stationery, uniforms and admission support. If you would like to know how a particular amount would be used, ask us through our contact page. An NGO that can answer this clearly is a good sign.

Step 4: Donate safely

  • Donate through the official website or bank details listed on it.

  • Never pay to a personal account or an unknown UPI ID.

  • Be careful with WhatsApp or phone solicitations from unknown numbers.

  • Always ask for an acknowledgment.

Other ways to help besides money

  • Volunteer your time for teaching or mentoring

  • Donate books, stationery or devices to a local program

  • Share the NGO's work with your network

  • Ask your employer about matching gifts or CSR programs

Frequently asked questions

Can I donate to an education NGO from abroad? Indian NGOs need FCRA registration to receive foreign contributions. Check whether the NGO has it before donating from outside India.

What is the minimum I can donate? Most NGOs accept any amount. Many donors prefer small monthly donations, which help the NGO plan.

Will I get a receipt? Reputable NGOs issue receipts, and an 80G receipt if they hold that registration.

Is my donation going directly to children? Ask the NGO for its financial statements, and what portion goes to programs versus administration.
