Women's Health & Empowerment: How Our MMU Van Supports Women Empowerment Programs
Empowerment programmes often focus on skills and income, and rightly so — but a woman managing an untreated health condition has far less capacity to take on new training, a new trade, or a new source of income. That's why The Phoenix Foundation's Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) is directly woven into our women empowerment work, not run as a separate initiative.

The Health Barrier Behind Many Empowerment Gaps
Anaemia, untreated hypertension, and undiagnosed maternal health complications are common in the rural and tribal communities we serve, and they disproportionately affect women who are also expected to manage households, farm labour, and childcare. Without basic health screening, these conditions often go unnoticed until they become serious enough to derail everything else — including participation in skill training or income-generating work.
What Our MMU Offers Specifically for Women
-
Maternal healthcare, including antenatal check-ups and haemoglobin/blood pressure monitoring
-
Non-communicable disease screening, catching hypertension and diabetes early
-
Women's health awareness sessions on nutrition, hygiene, and preventive care
-
Referral support for high-risk pregnancies or complications requiring hospital care
How This Connects to Skill Development for Women
Our skill development programmes specifically target women, offering practical, income-generating training. We've found that women who've had their basic health needs addressed through MMU visits show stronger, more consistent participation in these training batches — health screening removes one of the quiet barriers to women engaging in economic opportunity.
A Model Built on Both, Together
Rather than treating women's health and women's economic empowerment as two separate programme areas, The Phoenix Foundation runs them through the same community visits — the MMU van addresses health, while our skill training addresses income, both reinforcing each other across West Bengal, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
