What Happens Inside a Free Medical Camp? A Look at Our Mobile Health Units

If you've ever seen a medical camp poster pinned up in a village square or shared in a local WhatsApp group, you've probably wondered what actually happens once people show up. At The Phoenix Foundation, our free medical camps — run through our Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) — follow a simple but carefully planned routine designed to get real care to people who rarely see a doctor.

Before the Camp Even Starts

A good camp doesn't begin with the van arriving — it begins days earlier. Our Community Mobilizer visits the village, speaks with local leaders, anganwadi workers, and school staff, and spreads the word about the date, time, and location. This groundwork matters: it's the difference between five people showing up and fifty.

A Typical Day at the Camp

When the MMU van arrives, patients are registered first, often for the very first time, into a digital health record. From there:

• The Medical Officer conducts one-on-one consultations for common ailments, chronic complaints, and general check-ups

• The Staff Nurse handles vital checks, wound dressing, and vaccination support

• The Lab Technician, where available, runs on-the-spot tests for blood pressure, blood sugar, haemoglobin, and urine

• The Pharmacist dispenses free medicines prescribed during the consultation

• Anyone with a serious or complex condition is referred to the nearest hospital, with guidance on how to get there

Beyond Physical Health: Awareness That Actually Sticks

A medical camp isn't only about treating what's already wrong — it's also about prevention. Our teams run short, simple health awareness sessions on topics like maternal nutrition, hygiene, and non-communicable disease prevention. We've also started weaving in mental health awareness and women's health awareness programs, recognising that physical and mental wellbeing are deeply connected, especially for women managing households, farm work, and childcare with little support.

Why Follow-Up Matters More Than the Camp Itself

The real value of our model isn't the single day of the camp — it's what happens after. Because every patient's details are recorded digitally, our teams can track chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension across multiple visits, instead of treating each camp as an isolated event. A patient we screen this month is a patient we can follow up with next month.

The Phoenix Foundation's medical camps are active across West Bengal, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, reaching villages, tribal belts, and urban-slum clusters that mainstream healthcare infrastructure struggles to serve.
