Healthcare NGO in India: How The Phoenix Foundation's MMU Van Complements Our Skill Development & Education Work
Search "healthcare NGO in India" and you'll find plenty of organisations running medical camps in isolation from everything else they do. At The Phoenix Foundation, healthcare was never meant to stand alone — our Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) van works alongside our skill development and education programmes, because a community's health, income, and learning are rarely separate problems.

Why We Don't Treat Healthcare as a Standalone Programme
A child who is anaemic struggles to concentrate in school. A mother managing untreated hypertension has less energy to attend a skill training session. A young person recovering from a preventable illness loses working days they can't afford to lose. Health, education, and livelihood are connected in practice, even if NGOs often fund and report on them separately.
Our MMU Van: The Healthcare Backbone
The MMU is the core of our health sector work — a fully equipped mobile clinic delivering doctor consultations, free medicines, basic lab tests (BP, blood sugar, haemoglobin, urine), maternal and child healthcare, non-communicable disease screening, and referral support, run by a Medical Officer, Staff Nurse, Pharmacist, Lab Technician, Community Mobilizer, and Driver/Data Entry Operator.
How Skill Development Connects to Health Outcomes
Our skill development programmes train youth in employable trades, but we've found that health screening at the same community events significantly improves attendance and retention in training batches — people show up more consistently to a skill session when their basic health concerns have already been addressed nearby.
How Education Connects to Health Outcomes
Similarly, our education support work — helping children stay enrolled in school — pairs naturally with MMU visits, since child health checks and growth monitoring happen at the same community touchpoints where school engagement is discussed with parents.
Where This Integrated Model Operates
