Medical NGO in India: Inside The Phoenix Foundation's MMU-Led Healthcare, Education & Skill Programs
A medical NGO in India can mean many different things — a single hospital-linked charity, a vaccination drive organiser, or an organisation running mobile clinics deep into rural districts. The Phoenix Foundation falls into the last category, with our Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) forming the medical core of a broader, connected set of programmes.

Our Medical Model: The MMU Van
At the centre of our medical work is the MMU — a fully equipped vehicle delivering doctor consultations, nursing services, free medicines, basic lab tests (BP, blood sugar, haemoglobin, urine), maternal and child healthcare, non-communicable disease screening, health counselling, and hospital referrals. Every visit is logged digitally, allowing our team to follow up with patients over time rather than treating each visit as a one-off.
Beyond Medicine: Skill Development
Alongside our medical programme, we run skill development training for youth — practical, employable-skill courses designed to convert into real income. We've found that health and livelihood outcomes reinforce each other: a healthier community engages more consistently with skill training, and a more financially stable household is better positioned to prioritise ongoing healthcare.
Beyond Medicine: Education
Our education support programme helps keep children enrolled in school, particularly girls, who face steeper dropout risk in the communities we serve. MMU visits often double as a touchpoint for discussing school enrolment and child health together with families.
Beyond Medicine: Women Empowerment
Women's health screening — including maternal health checks and NCD screening — runs through our MMU visits alongside our women's skill training and livelihood programmes, treating women's health and economic independence as connected goals rather than separate initiatives.
Where We Operate
The Phoenix Foundation's medical and connected programmes run across West Bengal, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
