NGO Working in the Health Sector: Why MMU Vans Are the Backbone of The Phoenix Foundation's Work
Ask what kind of NGO The Phoenix Foundation is, and the honest answer is: a multi-programme development organisation, with the health sector work forming the backbone that everything else connects to. Here's why our Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) occupies that central position.

Why Health Comes First, Structurally
Every other programme we run — skill development, education, women empowerment, environment — depends to some extent on people being well enough to participate. A community battling untreated illness has less capacity to engage with training, schooling, or livelihood programmes, no matter how well-designed those programmes are. This is why our MMU van is often the first point of contact when we begin working in a new area.
What Our Health Sector Work Actually Involves
The MMU delivers doctor consultations, nursing services, free medicines, basic lab tests (blood pressure, blood sugar, haemoglobin, urine), maternal and child healthcare, non-communicable disease screening, health counselling, referral support, and digital patient tracking — run by a Medical Officer, Staff Nurse, Pharmacist, Lab Technician, Community Mobilizer, and Driver/Data Entry Operator.
How Health Sector Work Enables Everything Else
Once a community has had consistent contact with our MMU team, our Community Mobilizer typically finds it easier to introduce skill development training, education support conversations, and women's livelihood programmes — trust built through repeat, reliable healthcare visits carries over into engagement with our other programme areas.
Partnerships in the Health Sector
We regularly work with CSR partners specifically interested in health sector funding — companies looking to support an MMU route, a specific district's healthcare coverage, or a defined healthcare outcome target. Because we're CSR-1, 80G, and 12A certified, this kind of partnership is straightforward to structure and report on.
Where Our Health Sector Work Operates
The Phoenix Foundation's MMU-led health sector programme runs across West Bengal, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
